you can still use MSN Messenger with another email address, you just have to register it as a .net passport or whatever its called.
for msn clients on linux i recommend gaim and dMSN.
hope it helps!

Not that I know of , but I always considered it a rather annoying thing , having your messenger start up when you start up your mail-client.

I just go with GAIM ; works pretty good for my four different accounts+IRC.

to be able to use the msn messenger network, you need to have an account on it (hotmail, for example)...

even if you get an email address somewhere else, you'll need to use the hotmail account to log into the msn network... there's lot's of folks that have a hotmail account just for the messenger, they don't use the email (maybe for junk mail)...

there's lot's of choices when it comes to selecting an msn messenger client for linux... some, like "amsn", only work with msn, but some, like "gaim" and "kopete", work on many more networks (msn, yahoo, icq, aol, irc, etc.)...
