Question Mesa (libGL) causes system to hang (Debian 4.0 - stable)

While running ubuntu i had difficulty with libGL. I have tried compiling Mesa with the target as linux-dri-x86 (open gl, libGL...) and I still get a hung system. So I installed debian etch and even though all of the files needed for openGL and DRI were installed the system still hangs when applications using this library are called. I have read many posts and have yet to find a solution. Any help will be greatly appreciated. I will add that the driver works when compiled without direct rendering.
