man page query

> lpinfo (8) - show available devices or drivers
> lpmove (8) - move a job or all jobs to a new destination
> lpoptions (1) - display or set printer options and defaults
> lppasswd (1) - add, change, or delete digest passwords.

I know it's something to do with man pages but what is the significance of the numbers in brackets in the above snip?

Hi,

These are the man pages sections:

Section 1 - Commands
Section 2 - System Calls
Section 3 - Library Calls
Section 4 - Special Files
Section 5 - File Formats and Conversions
Section 6 - Games for Linux
Section 7 - Macro Packages and Conventions
Section 8 - System Management Commands
Section 9 - Kernel Routines

Each section deals with a specific group/subject. The number points to a specific section and is mentioned 'cause there could be other sections available for a specific topic.

For example: sort. man sort (man 1 sort for short) shows different info then man 3 sort.
