Unhappy Mail for root is dead.letter

I do not run my own mail server so my regular users system mail goes to ~/dead.letter which is fine, as it is mostly output from my own badly written shell scripts being run from cron.
I use Kmail to get my ISP mail via pop3, so far so good.
But for system mail to root it goes to /root/dead.letter and I miss important things and I have just lost my dyndns account because I did not see all the failure messages

So, how can I setup Kmail to get the root system mail when I am logged on as my regular user ?

I am running Gentoo.

I'm using Slackware and Sendmail, don't know if Gentoo will be similar. Make an email alias for root.
Code:
# vi /etc/mail/aliases
If not listed, make an entry like:
Code:
# Who gets root's mail.
root: username
Update the file and send the username a test message.
Code:
# newaliases
# echo "test message" | mail root -s "test"
Check user's email for test message.
