mail alert

i have a quick question (i hope). i currently use slack8 with sendmail running locally as my mail server. whenever i receive mail as a user, i receive notification that new mail has arrived. basically, what i'd like to know is how do i configure this? i'd like to check the mail as another user, but still be logged in as root. does anyone have suggestions? thanx. :-)
