lost in the world of tar

ok...i'm new.
i want to get the plugins necessary for avi and divx playback for xmms or xmps. i find them and they are tar packages. so i do what the instructions tell me to do but every time i configure it the prompt reads:

no acceptable cc found $PATH

what the hell does that mean? help!

thanks.

when does it give you this error ? like after ./configure or make or make install ??

Have you tried as root ?

The actual error means that it couldn't find gcc which is needed to install source such as tar.gz type files in the users path.

it gives it after ./configure

i think i tried as root too...but i've since figured out some better ways of solving the problem by just installing xine with the right plug-ins. it works fine now...lil touchy sometimes though.

anyway, thanks.

Ahh. most likely then if it can't find gcc, then from the initial install, it was never installed. In order to install source packages then, you would have to install gcc.. But glad its working for you now.

If you are planning on doing this "linux thing" long term, then you may want to look into compiling gcc. Just a thought though. You can usually find it on your install CD.
