Looking to contact other users logged into linux labs
Hi all,
I am taking some networking classes, and we are required to login (via ssh) to our linux labs to complete our assignment. I am trying to find a way to contact other member's currently logged in by posting messages to their terminal
I have tried the who command, but it does not seem to show other users, only my terminals:
crabpot8 tty7 2009-02-05 01:32 (:0)
crabpot8 pts/0 2009-02-05 01:33 (:0.0)
crabpot8 pts/1 2009-02-05 01:35 (:0.0)
and no others (although I know other's are currently connected). The wall and write commands will also work only to my own terminals.
Any thoughts? We are all connecting in to about 35 different linux boxes, each with their own IP. Multiple users seem to be able to connect to one IP just fine, and we have some sort of networked storage so that when you log in all of your documents are available under ~/Documents
Sorry to be so vague, but I am not sure about the topology of the setup (If you have any way to determine relevant info, just let me know what commands I can do and I will help out as much as I can)
Hm. So I realized that if we are logged in to the exact same IP, then this all works fine(this being who, write). I guess I was hoping that because it somehow retrieves our documents, we were actually all logging in to the same machine via different terminals and therefore it was just one machine with like 20 IP's.
I know, I know, this probably sounds retarded, but I am very new to playing with networks so I do not know what can be done yet, or what kind of setup to assume for a certain application(like 30 students doing minimal usage)
does anyone know if there is a way to view users logged into other hosts on the same subnet, and possibly to message them. The entire lab seems to be contained in a class c address space, so I would love to be able to see what users were logged into other computers in the lab and contact them accordingly
