Logging - howto for a newbie?

Hi,

I just kind of took it for granted that all my logging goes to /var/log/messages, but having tried Knoppix I see theres more to it than that. So exactly what commands/scripts are used for logging kernel stuff? I figured out "dmesg", but then theres also "syslogd" - do they do much the same thing?

Cheers,

M

No. dmesg is purely a convenient way of looking at kernel messages, whereas syslogd is a daemon that handles logging in a more general way. See "man syslogd".
