Linux Software for AV & Home Automation Control

I am planning a very modest TV room using fixed projection system but wish to keep all the hardware out of sight. This means physical access during operation will not be possible so remote control is required.

I am very keen to avoid IR if I can and have been looking at other control options. I have been disappointed to find that at present the most reliable options seem to be offered, at great expense by Crestron or Control4. These are closed proprietary systems which one can only buy from authorised dealer and all programming must be by them.

With the emergence of uPnP and DNLA standards and the increasing availability of AV kit with lan connection and web interfaces etc., it seems to me that there should be some open source equivalents being developed.

What I seek is to be able to control the whole system using tablet app.

Does anybody have similar views/objectives and know where I might start with this project?

Hello,

If I were you, check out X10 hardware, LinuxMCE, and linuxHA. Here is the link for linuxHA - http://www.linuxha.com/
I would personally go that route because there is a lot of support out there on the internet for that hardware, and linuxMCE is open source and free. Hope that helps!

Cheers,

Josh

Hi Josh,
Many thanks for the info. Looks more hopeful than most forums checked so far which seem dominated by installers and vendors of the proprietary offerings.
Thanks again,
