Linux Running Very Slow...

I've tried Red Hat 7.2 and Mandrake 8.0. No matter what I do, it runs slow. Very slow. Apps take forever to load in KDE and eventually crashes everytime. PC Specs:

PIII 450MHz
384MB PC100 SD-RAM
10GB 7200 RPM Hard Drive (Windows)
10GB 5200 RPM Hard Drive (Linux)
32MB GeForce2 MX
Soundblaster AudioPCI 64D

When I install I make a 768MB SWAP partition and the rest goes to /. Any help is appreciated greatly.

We need more info.
Search for a process that use all your resources [#ps -ax]
Check your memory usage [#free]
Search logs for something strange.
Check explicit hardware conflicts [#dmesg]
Search internet for linux compatibility of any part of your hardware: start from conrollers (hd, ..) and continue with any pci card [#lspci]

Did you set your hard/cd/dvd drives DMA/UDMA ? that could help.
configure em with "hdparm"
get it, then "man hdparm" for how to use.

dont forget to put it in a boot script so that you dont have to configure manually each time you boot.
