Linux not showing mounted filesystems when not

Using: Bunsenlabs Hydrogen

I'm having trouble with mounting filesystems.
I have a usb drive: mounted on /dev/sdc1 /media/clip
When I check with mount and Thunarthey show it is not mounted, but when I use ls /media/clip I can see the files.

When I use the command:
mount -t vfat /dev/sdc1 /media/clip
Now when I right click on the volume in Thunar it offers to umount, but when I select the directory /media/clip it show it is not mounted. Also ls /media/clip shows nothing.

It seems Linux has things mixed up. I tried to use GParted to format and repartition, but it didn't do anything because it thinks it is mounted. Then if I select unmout in GParted it mounts the partition.

How do I straighten this out?

what are you running?
most Linux now days have auto mount and hot plug for USB Ports, should not be an issue it mounts in /run/media/user (most do).

are you manually mounting?
file managers have that little arrow to umount it, but you still have to click the hdd name not the arrow to complete then mount of the drive.

A mount point is nothing more then a directory. If you see files in that directory and it is not used as a mount point then those files are on the /(root) partition.

When the flash drive is mounted to /media/clip and you do not see any files then the file system on the flash drive is empty.

Sorry for the trouble. I should have thought of that. I deleted the files in /media/clip and then tried mounting and umounting. Things work OK now. I must have copied the files to /media/clip by mistake at one point.

Thanks for the help
