If this is what your talking about:

http://www.hk8.org/old_web/linux/lnut/ch04_03.htm

you can only do that from within dos. It uses a bootloader called loadlin to boot linux from w/i dos. I know of nothing that will allow you to boot from w/i winxp unless it's some batch file to shut down xp and reboot to linux. I think that slack has or had a distro that you can install from and run w/i windows on a FAT32 partition but it's very limited due to it using FAT32 instead of a native linux file system and I don't know if it would work on windows based on the NT kernel(winxp and win2000).

Maybe I am off track, but cygwin may be what you are describing. Personally, you might consider vmware. Then you can run windows within linux, or linux within windows. Even drag and drop works between the two operating systems. Unfortunately, vmware has a price. Cygwin will give you a bash shell, tools, and xwindows with a choice of desktop managers such as twm, kde etc.

Try Co-operative Linux.

I can't get onto the net from Linux because I use a wireless card that isn't supported by any of the projects or official sources. It's the infamous am1772, but enough about that. I can only connect through Windoze, but this doesn't put me off Linux, because I can boot Linux WITH WinXP STILL RUNNING.

It runs as a program under Windoze and then boots the Linux kernel in a special emulator window. I've currently got it running a full version of GenToo (I'm not sure which).
