I use a lot of communication apps on my RedHat 9.0 box (ie; GAIM, Yahoo!, Licq, etc) to communicate with customers but since I've never known how to get them to stay in the Linux systray (is there such a thing?), I have just settled for minimizing them but this causes my work space to become cluttered and if I reboot for some reason, I end up having to bring them all up, log on and then minimize them again. Is there a way to just get them to stay in the system tray rather than simply minimizing them?.
use gaim, sim, kopete,or kmess. they will all dock to the tray. I personally recommend gaim. It uses aim, msn, icq, yahoo and irc protocols and maybe others.
edit: i see you said you tried gaim. you need to open preferences, go to plugins and load the system tray icon plugin. Upgrade to the newest version if you don't have it. It's better to have the latest version anyway.
I just wanted to swing by here again and say a big THANK YOU to all of you for your help. I do have the latest version of GAIM and it is my primary messenging client so this has been really helpful to know that I can add it to my systray:-). I would like to be able to do this will the latest version of LICQ and Yahoo! but I can't find any way to do it (I use Gnome on RedHat 9.0). Any suggestions?
sorry, I don't use licq or yahoo. Have you tried sim ? It is an icq clone and is very close to the same as the actual icq as far as functionality. It will run from tray in gnome and auto logon at startup.
Hey, that was pretty helpful!. Now I have ICQ, AIM, Yahoo! and MSN all down in my systray. Call me stupid but I never knew you could do that:-). - Thanks again people!
Well, I actually have AIM, MSN and Yahoo! (currently down) working in GAIM and I'm using Sim for ICQ. Now that I think about it maybe I might move ICQ over to GAIM too. Anyway, it all works good now
xmms http://xmms-kde.sourceforge.net/
I am sure there are other plugins for other WM. xmms has a HUGE inventory of plugins. www.xmms.org
I generally go for the visualization plugins.
Oh Yeah, if you have a multimedia keyboard, you can use the xmms keyboard plugin to map the volume, back/forward, etc to all the same buttons. I have a basic keyboard, so tried some of the function keys, but got sick of xmms flipping forward, volume going down, etc while using midnight commander.

you can use super karamba which has a xmms theme. this theme will embed xmms on your desktop which is cool. the player only appears when you place your mouse cursor to the side of your screen. it appears to run in the background and disappears automatically while playing. not exactly what you're looking for but another option.
