Linux crashes when unarchiving bz2 files

I am running Redhat 8.0 and when I try to unarchive large bz2 files (eg MythTV) the whole system crashes (no response to mouse or keyboard input) and I have to reboot.

I have reinstalled Redhat 8.0 and still get the same problem. There doesn't seem to be any consistency when the crash occurs ie sometimes at the beginning, sometimes mid way through.

I have tried using the Ark and the commandline using different options, but the same result.

My system:
duron 1100
256 MB PC133
Gigabyte KVML 266
Redhat 8.0

Please help!

One possibility is that you may be tight for disk space and crash whenever you fill up the partition.

Still crashes

Nope, I've got about 2gig free. So that should be heaps of space. It is the MythTv source that I was trying to unarchive, but that same thing happens with some other bz2 archives, while some others work???

were you unzipping with a graphical program or a command-line based one?
