LibreOffice doesn't recognise Type1 fonts any more

This is more of a heads-up than anything. LO used to recognise the Type1 fonts that come with ghostscript, but now it only recognises OTF and TTF fonts. And apparently the gs developers are not prepared to use OTF (which is compatible with Type1) because it screws up their pdf handling. This is a nuisance if you have used these fonts in earlier documents because they won't display correctly any more. I have made some use of one called URWChancery, which gives the illusion of copperplate handwriting.

There is a Type1_to_OTF conversion program available if you need it, which builds an OTF font set out of the Type1 fonts it finds in /usr/share/fonts. I've just run it as a slackbuild (though I had to cheat a bit to get it to work). I'm sure it's available in other distros. It uses the Adobe Free Development Kit to do the heavy lifting.

The trouble with converting Adobe to True Type is that there's going to be some loss of quality as the curves are of a different type.

If you look around on the web, you can find a ttf version of URW Chancery, although it lacks the Cyrillic. Actually, Chancery is not a copperplate but a chancery script; if anyone wants an actual copperplate, Champagne is a good one.

They're not being converted to True Type. Open Type is what is being used.

Under Slackware, there is a package called urw-core35-fonts-otf which provides many of the free Type 1 fonts in OTF format.

Yes, I'd forgotten that there are two formats available for OT. So long as you create the cubic-curve "cff " version of OT, conversion from Type 1 will be lossless.
