Kubuntu files unreadable, did a drive check now unbootable.

Hello,

I am using Kubuntu 18.10 upgraded from 18.04, I left the laptop running last night and in the morning it kept telling me that files are not accessible, even during the restart which halted.

I tried to run windows but I got an error with something like (unable to access hd0)

I inserted a bootable Kubuntu 18.10 USB drive, installed gparted and checked my ext4 drive and it did a lot of stuff (file attached)

I then tried to boot kubuntu and it stopped with a blinking dash on a black screen I pressed CTRL + Alt + F2 and it was ready to start a new terminal.

Then I booted Windows 10 which is running now.

I would like you to help me understand what happened, how to fix it and if my HDD is failing and needs replacement.

Thank you for you help.

Something caused a great deal of corruption on the filesystem. gparted's file system checker made the filesystem consistent again, but the price to pay is loss of many files - some obviously required for booting.

I would have a closer look at that disk before committing any valuable data to it. On Windows, I use Crystaldiskinfo (freeware) to access SMART values, and of course you should perform a Windows disk check.

The disk connection might be flaky as well.

Thank you berndbausch,

I installed Crystaldiskinfo and the results are attached.
The windows disk check came back with no errors.

I found out that I need to do a lot of research to understand SMART values. but from the Caution on the top left I think I should consider buying a new HDD.

What do you think?
