"how would i unmount a harddrive and remount it as a writable drive in knoppix 5.0?"

This documentation explains how to do it in the section "rescuing a non-booting Linux system":

http://www-128.ibm.com/developerwork...y/l-knopx.html

The order of the commands is:

su
umount
mount
