Keyboard layout

Hi, I am using X in an embedded context and need to remap the caps lock key to just give a minus character instead of caps lock. On an ancient system, I previously found an xmodmap like this worked:
Code:
keycode 66 = minus
clear Lock
But it does not seem to work on a new system. 66 is the correct keycode (according to xev).

With the old xmodmap tweak on a new system: The minus is generated (good), but the key still toggles caps lock (which I don't want to happen).

Any idea how to fix this?

I think you've got the commands in the wrong order, and need to clear the assignment to Lock before you can reassign.

Yes that got it. Thanks.

My own diagnostics efforts were made more difficult than necessary; it seems xmodmap becomes unreliable when one keysymname becomes linked to more than one modifiername: a 'Meta_L' key that I do not even have was on Mod1 and Mod3 in my case. 'remove mod1=meta_l' made that mess sane.
