Kernel question

This may be a stupid question, I'm not really sure, but can I compile the Linux kernel and run a simulated Linux OS in Windows? I've downloaded the source of 2.4.9 to look through some of the code and read the comments (some are quite funny). I'm just curious if I can compile it and run it in a simulated view in windows.

I really don't know. I was thinking I could compile it to an executable in Windows or something.

:i feel so dumb:

I think it is dumb idea, it's the like adopting Win98 on PowerPC
You can try out VMWARE - really good thing, and your hardware resources allow you to do use it.

But it wouldn't do anything!!

I think the closest you'll get is using one of the distros like phat linux that install on a win partition. The kernel by itself isn't going to do a whole lot though.

Why don't you play with it on your RH system?

Yeah, the idea is more for a "hacker" reason. I'm curious to learn more about how the kernel works.

I'm scared to mess it up at all. It's running my websites.

I see. If you can, find yourself an old 486 to play with. You can usually find them for dirt cheap, and best of all, it's no big deal if you break it

I've got three old boxes I could play with. I just don't have the space to set them up. I'll probably end up taking out one and playing with it.

Speaking of funny source code, check out "drivers/net/sunhme.c" the driver for the Sun "happy-meal" ethernet adapter...

Hmm

I'd recommend purchasing a book on operating systems before you take on Linux kernel hacking. Even though those kernel hackers may say it's not as hard as it seems, it will be if you lack the concepts of an operating system (e.g. what is a kernel and why you can't run more then one at time, especially windows and unix kernels).

I might just do that once I finish my current book. Although this venture may have to wait until Spring semester is over.
