"kernel panic!......" message is seen (slightly different problem than the 1s here)

My last proble rec'd a very quick response.
Tnx 4 dat.

I've already read the other posts with this kernel panic message. but mine's slightly different:

OS: RHL 9.0
Kernel: 2.4.20-8

Systems: Sony Vaio PCG-V505P Laptop
Dell Inspiron 8200

I cud not get to install GRUB on both these systems and they give me a "Invalid bot disk" message or something similar.

My priority: I need a Linux Bootdisk to boot to this systems..

I tried mkbootdisk, but when i try to boot with this disk, i get the "Kernel Panic" message asking me to pass some options to 'init='.

syslinux.cfg Listing>>>>>>>>>
default linux
prompt 1
display boot.msg
timeout 100
label linux
kernel vmlinuz
append initrd=initrd.img ro root=/dev/hda1
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

hda1 is the correct partition where all the files are installed.
if any1 wants any more info please ask.......

Hope this was seen by somebody b4 and is able to help me..

Tnx every1

It sounds like it can't read/find the root partition. Are you sure it's /dev/hda1? Also, instead of using mkbootdisk, you can try making the floppy by hand using this:

Hi Kilgoretrout,

I face the same problem after following the steps listed in the link u gave.
It gave me the same "Panic" message.

Yeah I'm very much sure that partition is /dev/hda1

I used another boot floppy (from RHL9.0 installed on a desktop and changed the 'root=' path .cfg file in it, to point to /dev/hda1).
This floppy was able to boot my laptop(Sony Vaio) [hda2 worked for Dell Inspiron]

But when i tried to copy these contents to another floppy(extfs formatted), it was not able to boot at all.
I really need to make separate Boot floppies for these systems .

One more info: I tried to do a 'grub-install /dev/hda1' , but on reboot, I get 'GRUB>' prompt and trry to boot using 'boot'. it telle me to load kerne first. How do i do that from this prompt{Hope this cud be my workaround, although boot floppies are a necessity}.

BTW: Tnx for the fast response!

Just try /dev/hda2
I mean, what have you got to lose?
If I try and boot from /dev/hda1 myself, I get a kernel panic.

tnx for the idea Chu,

I had tried combinations of that.

anyways i solved my floppy boot problem in another way.
I used a 3rd party s/w which makes images of floppies. I made images of a working boot floppy of another computer and then changed the partition info in the .cfg file for the other floppies i created.

I did this since i desperately needed separate boot floppies.

I wud luv to know the linux way of solving this issue.
Cud u ar any1 help.

Tnx again, Chu.
