/bin/sh: can't access tty: job control turned off

What is the possible cause of this error?
any help is appreciated
Try going into /etc/fstab and changing "/dev/sda1" to "/dev/hda1".
ALERT! /dev/hda1 does not exist. Dropping to a shell!
The disk is of scsi type, i think that jay73 has right.
I have never compiled kernel before, and I would appreciate if you just give some short notices where to klick when I issue make menuconfig, to get disk working.
Read the section that is dedicated to 2.6 kernel compiles; make sure that you enable support for your filesystems under Loadable Modules and that you include your disk controller under Device Drivers.
Not necessarily. Have you noticed that there is also an initrd in your boot directory? SCSI support may have been loaded from the initrd instead of straight from the kernel until now.
