Question Kernel error (ubuntu 7.04)

Hello,

I have tried to compile and install new kernel (2.6.22.21) in Ubuntu 7.04 everything went well but when I want to boot in the new kernel I got the following error output:

ALERT! /dev/sda1 does not exist. Dropping to a shell!
...
...
/bin/sh: can't access tty: job control turned off

What is the possible cause of this error?

any help is appreciated

Try going into /etc/fstab and changing "/dev/sda1" to "/dev/hda1".

Did you make sure to compile file system support into the kernel as well as support for your disk controller(s)?

now is the message like this:

ALERT! /dev/hda1 does not exist. Dropping to a shell!

The disk is of scsi type, i think that jay73 has right.

I have never compiled kernel before, and I would appreciate if you just give some short notices where to klick when I issue make menuconfig, to get disk working.

Thanks!

http://www.digitalhermit.com/linux/K...FIGURATION-2-6

Read the section that is dedicated to 2.6 kernel compiles; make sure that you enable support for your filesystems under Loadable Modules and that you include your disk controller under Device Drivers.

I wasn't patient for your answer... Thanks

I have klicked SCSI device support and SCSI disk support. I have to wait 1 hour to see what will happen..

But I have one more question:

In old (original) kernel .config file there wasn't SCSI support, but the system was working. Did I miss something ?

Not necessarily. Have you noticed that there is also an initrd in your boot directory? SCSI support may have been loaded from the initrd instead of straight from the kernel until now.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Initrd

If your self-compiled kernel includes all that is needed, you don't need an initrd anymore.
