kernel debugging - can't boot?

I'm in the middle of installing on a new computer, and I've just compiled the kernel. The problem is, when I try to boot, it seems to hang half way through loading the kernel (once it's detected my CD drive). Is there a way to get uber-verbose kernel messages whilst booting up? It doesn't display a message to say what it's hanged on, so short of an infinite number of kernel recompiles, there must be a way to diagnose this problem. Right?

Please help me .

That sounds familier, kernel hangs on the CD whist booting http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=180398 What kernel version are you using?

Ah, it looks like that may be the answer. I'm compiling 2.6.6, so I'll pass that option to the thread, and see if it answers my dreams .

Will report back with results.

Nope, it was nothing to do with ACPI. The kernel just hangs half way through booting.

Does anyone know what the kernel does after sensing my IDE devices? Or how I could find out?

Would be very much appreciated.

Update: never mind folks. I configured the kernel for the millionth time, changing some random option (I can't even remember what it was, it didn't seem to be wholly relevant), and it worked.
