Kded causing HD activity... why? ..and how do I stop it?

I recently noticed that the hd light on my laptop started to flash every two seconds. After doing some trouble shoting I found that a process called "kded" was causing this. When I killed it, the hd light stoped flashing.

The problem is that kded seems to be responsible for a number of KDE features such as keeping the battery monitor alive etc. So, basically I need to have it running.

Does anyone know what kded is doing and how I can stop it from accessing the HD constantly?

I'm running slack 10.2 and KDE 3.4.2 by the way.

Any help would be really appreciated.

I have had a look there already but it doesn't really help me.
User documents would be more useful than developer documents.
Thanks anyway...

Edit:
Found these threads on the same subject.

Now I know which service to stop to get rid of the problem but I still don't know why this is happening. If anyone could shed some light on this it would be great.
