KDE Update

I've recently tried to update to KDE3.3.2 from 3.2.3 on Slackware 10.

These are the steps I've taken to update:

get slackware packages from KDE.org
created a directory ~/kdepack where I downloaded the packages to
logged out of X to CLI
ran pkgtool to add packages from current directory (~/kdepack)

update seemed to go fine, then back in X, I decided to remove the old kde packages.
I assumed that I could remove all the 3.2.3 packages as long as I had 3.3.2 of the same installed.

After trying to startx, this error is produced:

Code:
could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/CID/ removing from list!
/root/.xinitrc: line 28: startkde: command not found.
obviously KDE doesn't start and this leaves me at a CLI prompt.

The update had worked fine (updated splash screen/version shows) until I had tried to remove the old packages. Any suggestions, fixes, or reasons why removing the old packages causes this?

Thanks in advance.

updatedb gave this error:

Code:
could not open database: /var/lib/slocate/slocate.db: No such file or directory.
I'm going to attempt to reinstall the new version of KDE and hope it fixes a few problems.

I also noticed that a lot of the custom icons are gone from the K menu, and file associations are wrong.
