Kali Linux 2020.2 not installing?

I have used Kali in the past, but I'm having issues installing the latest version (2020.2). I have tried installing in VMWare Workstation 15.5 and on a physical machine (Dell Precision).

I receive an error message stating, "An installation step failed. The failing step is: Select and install software". I have read lots of forums and it seems like others are having the same issue.

As suggested by these forums, I have expanded the HDD to 30GB or more and selected GNOME as my desktop setup. I still receive the RED ERROR message.

The posted image looks like you are trying to install Ubuntu 14.04 versus Kali 2020.2.

Did you follow the instructions?

Perhaps the VM is named ubuntu1404. Whatever it might be, if there is enough space on the root filesystem, I wonder if you have access to the required repositories.

In the absence of an obvious cause, I would open a shell prompt and check the apt logs for details about this error.

Ouch, your are correct, I was not paying attention.

I am guessing the OP missed a step somewhere in the install process.

It also says you can try to ignore this step and continue anyhow. Did you?

Yes, I followed the instruction to a "T" but I still received the same error message. After skipping the hung-up installation step, it rebooted but there is no GUI (see attached). Is there a command to enable the GUI or download one with the "apt-get install" command?

I'm not a BIG Linux guy so some help would be appropriated.

Thanks,

P.S. That first red error screen shot was downloaded from the internet. The error message that i'm receiving is the same red error without the Unbuntu name. Sorry for the confusion.

My advice to you is not install kali at all but run their pre-built VM images that you just import and fire up. Couldn't be easier and no installation required. My entire team uses kali this way and we have zero issues.

Thanks man!!! This worked perfectly and sooo simple.

Just wondering how to to install on a physical machine though. For now, I have no need to.

Thanks again,

I have installed before and I think just grabbed one of the installer images, depending on your desktop preference and installed it. I never had an issue but it is so much easier to use the virtual. image that I never install any more. Actually, I don't use Kali at home any more because I really only need like 4 or 5 tools so I just install those in whatever Linux distro I happen to be using at the moment.
