Is there any usable equalizer for linux?

Hi All!

I'm a noobie here, i'm using Linux for about 2 years, and I use mPlayer for watching movies and listen to music, but I have problems with its equalizer. I know I could use xmms for music...
My question is: Is there an equalizer applet or something for KDE, Gnome , or XFCE? I really need some hard stuff, I have a 5.1 soundcard which is great , but I really need a good equalizer for it.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

I believe alsa (alsamixer) is able to use the built-in equalizer of your soundcard if there is one.

there is not alot for you in the catagory of easy
if you want to run jack audio server and play apps through jack
there is a killer equalizer / mixer called jamin
otherwise the only thing i can think of is
ecaeffectspedal a part of ecasound and it uses effects plugins in particular LADSPA plugins
which has a 15 band eq
it can work through alsa
it's not what you are used to though
it's more like controlling a feedback loop or setting up an extreemly loud pa that wants to feed back but it is capable of some nice sounds
