Is Linux clustering for Video compression possible?

I do a lof of video compression (DVD's to avi, divx, etc.) Is it possible to use clusteing to speed the rendering, encoding and compression process?

I am flexible as to what Distro to use and am going to purchase new hardware soon. Just wondering if I should plan this into the mix. Thanks for any input.
