Hi,

I HAVE A DUAL BOOT - MANDRAKE AND WINXP, I WOULD LIKE TO REINSTALL XP.

Michelk wrote,

"You will need to change the BIOS to boot the CD drive first. Then boot the XP install CD. Since you have already created a windows partition XP shoudn't have a problem.

XP will overwrite MBR so you will need to restore lilo. You can use the MDK 1st CD and boot to rescue mode. The select restore lilo from the menu."

DOES THIS MEAN THAT REINSTALLING XP WILL NOT EFFECT THE FAT32 PARTION IN ANY WAY?

Kerr wrote,

"make a boot disk (floppy) for your mandrake, install windows without any worry and *without touching any of the Linux partitions*. But your boot loader will be lost, so now boot your system using the floppy, login as root, and simply reinstall lilo (lilo -v ). I would suggest you to make 2-3 bootdisk, because floppies are quite unreliable as far as my experience is concerned :-)."

Is this an either/or?
Boot mdk from floppy to reinstall lilo OR restore lilo through rescue on mdk disk1.

I am sure you can tell that I am a bit paranoid and clueless regarding this XP reinstall.

If you have any tips, advice, or links you can share with me I'd be really happy

Many Thanks
Adhara

Hi,

Well the thing is you can use either of the two available options. It doesnt make a big difference both of them work. But I havent tried rescue mode as such (but my friends say thrs nothing big about it) .
As far as the FAT32 partition is concerned, the one on which your windows xp was installed will obviously be lost once your format it for a *new* installation.

All the best!

i finally got both windows and linux installed on my comp. thx for all your help. i did notice when windows was trying to format the fat32 partition created by linux to ntfs it was having issues. also now i have a new problem, not sure if i should start a new thread... i have a broadcom lan card BCM 4401 and I installed the drivers on my xp and it is working. BUT for some odd reason it stopped working on my mandrake, I went to the MCC and tried connecting to it but it wont... have any you ran into this problem? and are there any command line commands that I can run to make it restart the driver? or anything?
