Unhappy Important Folder deleted by mistake using the Gnome File Manager.

I was in the File Manager of my Gnome Desktop (Ubuntu distro) when oh my God!, I deleted a whole folder called "immagini". Inside the folder they were lots of photos very important for me. I feel empty. My memories gone. I clicked "Cancel" instead of "Move to trash" and all gone.

Can anybody tell me if there is any way to undo this disaster? The folder "immagini" was a folder of just images, not text. I'm not able to make the job with the "Grep" command. I'm lost in the middle of all the recovery tutorials.

In my computer I created an EXT3 partition which contains the "/home" folder. Before the error the path to my photos was "/home/xavier/immagini/".

Following a tutorial I copied that on a shell:

echo "DEVICE DIRECTORY FS-TYPE" > tmp; mount | cut -d" " -f1,3,5 | \
sort >> tmp; cat tmp | column -t | sed -e "1s/.*/`tput smso`&`tput rmso`/"

...and the result is what follows:

DEVICE DIRECTORY FS-TYPE
/dev/hda5 / ext2
/dev/hda6 /home ext3
devpts /dev/pts devpts
proc /proc proc
sysfs /sys sysfs
tmpfs /dev/shm tmpfs
tmpfs /dev tmpfs
tmpfs /lib/modules/2.6.12-10-386/volatile tmpfs
usbfs /proc/bus/usb usbfs

But I don't know what else to do.

Can anybody help me?

Thanks!

oh my god!

Let's get this clear.

Did you -
a) Right-click on folder then click 'delete' then click 'delete'
b) Right-click on folder then click 'delete' then click 'cancel'
c) Highlight folder and then press 'delete' or backspace key

If you did
a) See subject line; this is a permanent delete in the reiserFS filesystem. I deleted lots of a friend's work once the same way. You may be able to recover files from EXT3 - search specifically for that subject.
b) Look in the wastebasket.
c) Look in the wastebasket.

Your post isn't clear about what your exact actions were - if you did none of the above, please explain further.

Good luck.

And sorry.

Dear Kirmonkey,

I did a permanent delete. I'm not experienced enough in Linux to be able to face this kind of problems. I lost the patience and the images.

Somebody recommended me Photorec but it just filled all my disk capacity of recovered thumbnails and the operating system collapsed because of the lack of space. As always, frustation and waste of time.

Now it is finished. The computer is away from me and the images are definitively lost.

I want to thank you for your answer and your time.

Kind regards.

For the future you can back up important files and memories at an online backup site. I imagine some are free and some you may need to pay a little for. But hey, a little money for such important memories is worth it in my opinion.

I currently backup to an external HDD from an old laptop connected by a usb cable, I use sbackup for the task, it works so so, a little tricky on file permissions
