i wish to work with linux

hai i am sakthi from india,i am very much interested in learning and working with linux,AT present i am having DELL LAPTOP INSPIRION 1420
,i tried with many linux like opensusi,redhat,federo,but federo 8 worked properly.i wish to work with command prompt, so pls suggest me linux os which will help me learn frm bascis. Intially i posted a thread in this forum,they suggested me ubuntu linux,is it ok.Pls tell me the ways to improve my knowledege in linux
