.htaccess and password protect

I created a file called .htaccess that I put in the directory that I want to protect, and I created a file called .htpasswd and put it in a different directory.

When I loging to the site it sometimes prompts me a 2nd time to login.

How come that is?

You should not put .htaccess in the directory that you want to protect. Can you post your configuration file? Otherwise, there is too little information to understand what's going on here.
