how to start wireshark

I seem to be missing something...

as root I did.
yum install wireshark

Packages installed and eventually i get msg telling me that yum has finished.

'whereis wireshark' returns
wireshark: /usr/lib/wireshark /usr/share/wireshark

yet there is not an executable to be found.
no bin/ directories in either of the above directories
/bin, /sbin, /usr/sbin, and /usr/bin

do not have an executable by the name of wireshark.

please help.

steve

wireshark is typically distributed in two parts, "wireshark" and "wireshark-gnome". basically the logic is that there's so much obscenely useful stuff in the backend of wireshark that it's foolish to commit it's use to requiring gnome libraries for the ui. so wireshark itself only inclues the tshark console interface. install the gnome pacakge two for the full on ui.

Me too. I can't believe this wasn't given more prominence in the docs. I'm sure it's in there, but still..

Smile Thanks

Perfect solution - why is gnome (or another windows package) directly installed as a dependency? The wireshark package is not very useful without it!
