How to simulate a keypress..

Hello gurus,

I don't know if the following is possible, but you never know.

My linux box has a tv card, and I'm able to stream a live tv channel. I can watch that channel from anywhere there's an Internet connection.

One thing I'd like to able to do is change channels remotely. Currently, I can change channels directly on the linux machine's keyboard by pressing the UpArrow. But I want to be able to do same remotely.

What I'd like to know is, if it's possible to simulate a keypress in linux? If there's a system command that would do that, I can then use a scripting language like PHP to issue that command.

TIA.

Just to offer more explanation:

CLIENT --> INTERNET --> SERVER

I want to be able to click the UpArrow button on the SERVER from the CLIENT over the Internet.

Something tells me this can be done, because the same principle applies when a user controls another via Remote Desktop.
