how to see linux version ?


Hi
iam new to linux,i want to see the version of my linux.
I used cmd uname -v ---it is giving the kernal operating system version.
but i want linux version alone. Advanced thanks for the help,u people r going to give.

uname -a

if you dont know how to use a command read

<command> --help
or
man <command>

hello...
i have tried with all options we have like -a,-v,-p,-i,--version ,-s also.....from help.i am getting only the kernels os version.but i want my linux version.
example:
uname -v ------------ i got #1 SMP Fri Jun 6 17:55:13 EDT 2003
uname --version ------------- uname (GNU sh-utils) 2.0.11

Look in /etc for a file like debian-version or redhat-release. Which file it is varies from distro to distro.

uname -r
gives you the Linux kernel version-- or are you referring to something else?

Thanks Lassew , i got the version wt i want.we are using linux redhat verison 7.2 .
i have used cmd---cat /proc/version
