I'm currently using Red Hat 9, I want to install drivers for my video card (NVIDIA) but the download instructions says that i should install in text mode, how do I exit X and reboot to text mode in red hat 9?? or is it ok if i install even if i'm in X??
No, you have to reboot into text mode for installing drivers.
In order to reboot into text mode, you have to manually edit a text file -> /etc/inittab
There are a lot of information in this file, but if I remember correctly, there is an option near the start that has the number five in it, for booting into GUI mode. Change it into 3 and you will boot into text mode.(Of course you have to be root)
A simpler idea is to log in as root and type in the shell as
init 3
which will start the computer in text mode for one session only!
'CTRL+ALT+Backspace' can be used to turn off your graphics mode and go to text mode. After you have completed the changes you can go back to graphics mode by typing 'startx' or you can restart the system by typing 'reboot' or shut down the system by typing 'halt'
