how to put desktop pc into standby mode?

I heard that linux-2.6 series has acpi support. My desktop pc supports both acpi and apm (i think so).
How can i make my computer go into standby mode (like i do it in windows)? I have acpi enabled in kernel. I also have configured my system to shutdown when i press the power button (using ACPI).

Linux-2.6.1
Fedora Core 1
Pentium 4 1.7 GHz
320 MB SD RAM
