how to print the partition table

all i want to do is know what partitions are where on my hard drive... but fdisk / cfdisk cannot tell me that currently, I supposed because I am currently booted form that hard drive in read-write mode. I get an error to the effect of "cannot open disk drive" when trying only to print info... what should I do here?

Just a wild stab here, but are you sure that you aren't trying to fdisk your CDROM?

That's the only thing that I came up with on Google (pretty thin...)

Hmmm, wait a sec.

Try here:

http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/mini/Linux+WinNT-2.html

It mentions how Windows can screw up your HD (even the linux side, which I was not aware of)

Here's the text:

Quote:
If, however, NT has really screwed you over and cfdisk can't even run, complaining that it cannot open /dev/sda, then you'll need to take more extreme action. You'll need that MBR you saved previously. Clear and restore the MBR (but not the signature) with:

Maybe this?

http://www.faqs.org/faqs/linux/faq/part6/

Quote:
9.14. df Says, "Cannot read table of mounted file systems."

There is probably something wrong with your /etc/mtab or /etc/fstab
files. If you have a reasonably new version of mount, /etc/mtab should
be emptied or deleted at boot time (in /etc/rc.local or /etc/rc.d/*),
using something like

$ rm -f /etc/mtab*
