How to improve fonts in Linux GUI

Hello,
I have been using Linux for the last 4 years.. and tried different distributions..
somehow i always feel that the font texture in linux gui (KDE or GNOME) is not quite as good as it should be (for example in comparison to *indows)...

can you suggest some tricks to improve the fonts ..

regards,
kanwar

Using True Type fonts with Font Smoothing enabled seems to make things good for me. I even think my Linux fonts look better than my Windows ones.
Are you using an LCD monitor? If you are, there are some tweaks you can do to enhance them.

It's, of course, different for different monitor types, but on my HP - 91 CRT monitor, the Dejavu family of fonts with anti-aliasing (no hinting) provides a sharp edged, easily viewable font for over 45 year old eyes.
