How to edit my BIOS??? Running XP and RH7.2

Hey guys, I'm an extreme newbie...just installed RedHat 7.2 on my HP Pavillion running XP. (I use a boot disk to get to Linux)

Anyway, I've been going crazy trying to get Linux to recognize my ethernet card it's the HP ENV1204D -TX PCI.

I've tried more than a few approaches from more than a few forums, and nothing has worked. BUT, I've seen on this board that if you edit your BIOS to either disable PnP or do something to free IRQ 9?(???), then RedHat will recognize the card.

So, how do I edit my BIOS...yeah, I know I gotta be careful, but I don't even know how to get to it at this point.

Also, If anyone knows specifically how I can get my NIC recognized that would make my life GREAT!

Thanks alot - Clint

Most of the time there is an option right when you turn your computer on to hit a key to go into the bios. On my HP laptop its f2. This will take you to the bios screen. I doubt you ruin anything by changing any of the settings. Its when update your bios that you can get into trouble.

Hope that helps

Funny, I can't find that network card on google.

Try the command: 'lspci' and post what you see that looks network cardy.

When people say be careful editing your BIOS... they usually mean flashing the BIOS, which is replacing it. That's dangerous. If you edit your BIOS all goofy, there is always an option in there for 'reset defaults'. Whatever the HP displays when it boots... like hit F2 to enter setup or something like that will get you to BIOS.

Cheers,

Finegan

OK I got the BIOS figured out...it's f1 for me.
AND THE NIC IS THE EN1207D not the en1204d...my mistake.

I tried messing with the bios to no avail...anybody no how I can get the thing recognized?

Thanks again

You'll need to ID the chip on your NIC and load the kernel module for that chip.

Aw bloody hell, its another 8139 card. I don't know if Mandrake 8.1 shipped with the new kernel driver or the old.

Try:

insmod rtl8139

or

insmod 8139too

If it doesn't kick back errors, try:

ifconfig eth0 up

After that its all a matter of how you get your IP, static, dhcp, pppoe?

Cheers,

thanks finegan,

the lines:

insmod 8139 too
ifconfig eth0 up

both had no errors, so I'm guessing they worked, but how can I tell if it's recognized? After that, does I use commands to set my
IP and all that, or do I do something in KDE?

I'm using a cable modem and I know my IP and Domain Name and DNS server, but what do I do with all that?

Mandrake 8.x uses the 8139too module, but cpw79 said it was the Rh 7.2 install that was causing the grief, not Mandy. They're both of the same vintage, so Rh 7.2 might use 8139too as well. A quick way to check is to run "lsmod" and see what NIC driver appears in the output.

cpw79,

If you haven't already, read the info in this current thread in Networking.
The driver in question there is the tulip driver, but the advice is generic.

Also, for information on how to use the network config utility that Redhat uses in v7.2, try this link:
