how to create a postscript file

I am interested in finding out how to create pdf files starting from various sources... I have read so far that most of the time you create a postscript file first and then use something like ps2pdf to convert to a pdf file. I have read through various examples of how to do that... however, there is one scenario I did not come across yet, which is actually the scenario I need to do first.

- I am starting with a hardcopy of a document (with graphics). I want to scan this into the computer creating a gif or jpeg file. I want to then get that file into the pdf format. But I need to get it to postscript first. How can I do that? or, am I going about this all wrong?

thanks in advance.

The latest SUSE distro... although I have not used it much yet. I have a decent 'knowledge' of linux but not much experience yet... I'm a n00b.
