How to check linked dependencies of installed prog?

Say ; I want to uninstall a package , but don't want to blow other parts of my system onto the crappile.
How can I check , if the package , up for removal , contains any dependencies , vital to other apps?

Most *sane* uninstallation scripts will warn you of dependencies first. I know for a fact debian is this way. Gentoo is smart enough to only uninstall a single application. Slackware is well...you don't really "uninstall" persay. RedHat/Mandrake I've only ever used the X utilities but they definately warn you when other apps are going to be removed.

Uhm...
And what about packages , compiled from source?

I'm actually looking for some command or applet I could run on the Program to be removed , that will spit out a list which tells me what file is connected to what other program. (If there are any , ofcourse)
That would be quite helpfull in getting to understand how the entire shebang , called Linux hangs together.

It means as root:

ldd gedit

this will show you any dependencies from the /lib/modules dir.
