Sorry. the command I used is cat /proc/cpuinfo

According to here and the value alongside "cpu cores", that CPU type has 8 cores (16 with hyperthreading). So you have two physical CPUs in the case, each of which has 8 cores, and each core is hyperthreaded, giving 32 logical cores. "physical id" shows there are only two CPUs (0 and 1), and the value of "processor" shows the hyperthreaded core count (0-31).

There are 32 cores in total (numbered from 0 to 31). Each CPU has 8 cores, so that you have 4 CPUs. You can easily find information on the Intel site for the exact CPU model. http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=46499 will confirm there are 8 cores/cpu.

Edit: oops.. I didn't think about hyperthreading. pwc, how do see hyperthreading information in cpuinfo?

Edit: re-oops... I should have looked better. the ht flag is there and the number of siblings is twice the number of cores, so hyperthreading is active. Sorry for the confusion.

I ran the following commands to get number of physical cpus, virtual processors, etc.

$ grep 'physical id' /proc/cpuinfo | sort | uniq | wc -l
2
$ grep ^processor /proc/cpuinfo | wc -l
32
$ grep 'cpu cores' /proc/cpuinfo
cpu cores : 8


So, we seem to have 2 CPUs, with 8 cores each and with hyperthreading, we have 32 cores.

That alone is enough to tell you this physical CPU has 8 actual cores and the apparent number of cores is 16 because of hyperthreading.

Then (as I think you already discovered) you look at how many different physical id values are reported to discover how many physical CPUs you have.
