How do I stop the pictures in youtube search results from displaying frames from the video in rapid succession, when using Chromium browser?

I'm a Linux user, and am having a problem with youtube.com when accessing it with the Chromium web browser (ver 53.0).

When youtube lists search results, each result shows a picture. The problem is that when the mouse is horizontally in line with any given picture, the picture starts displaying frames from the video in rapid succession, ad infinitum.

This is so annoying and distracting. It's driving me crazy. I just want to see completely still pictures. I can't find any discussion of the problem via google.

Firefox (ver 49.0) doesn't do this.

My Question:

How do I stop the rapid frame display from happening when using Chromium, so that all I see are STILL pictures?

Unfortunately, moving the mouse to the far left or right of the page isn't a useful solution.

I see the same thing with Firefox 86 and Brave 1.20 (based on Chromium 88). The only way I know is to not have the mouse pointer over any "thumbnail". I hope someone has some CSS code to stop the animations or whatever is causing this effect.

This is probably a feature of Youtube's Javascript and has nothing to do with the browser.

By the way, you are asking the same question at Stackexchange. Linuxquestions doesn't want you to post across forums, neither Linuxquestions forums nor foreign forums. The reason is not jealousy but the need to keep discussions focused in one place.

On Brave browser (v. 1.20 based on Chromium 88), I opened brave://adblock
and added exactly
Code:
||i.ytimg.com/an_webp
in the Custom filters box near the bottom of the page. Seems to work.

Thanks so much hish2021 (#4) for your solution - it looks promising. I've got
the AdBlock extension (ver 4.7.1) running in my Chromium (not AdBlock Plus).

So I right-clicked the red AdBlock icon at top right of the Chromium window.
Clicked Options. That then shows a url in the address bar of

Code:
chrome-extension://laaddmkdoaknblbdebmojchcpokocolf/options.html
And on the left of the screen are the headings Premium, General, Filter Lists,
Customize, Support. So I clicked Customize, and the screen shows

Code:
Customize AdBlock
=================

The filter lists block most ads on the web. You can also...

Block more ads
--------------

- Block an ad by its URL
- Hide a section of a webpage

Stop blocking ads
-----------------

- Show ads on a webpage or domain
- Show ads everywhere except for these domains...

Manually edit your filters <EDIT-button>
--------------------------

Be careful: if you make a mistake here a lot of other filters, including the
official filters, could get broken too!
Read the <filter syntax tutorial> to learn how to add advanced blacklist and
whitelist filters.
When you mouse over the entries above, that start with a dash (-), a hand
appears. So I clicked on "- Block an ad by its URL", but nothing happens. So I
disabled the ScriptSafe extension, but still nothing happens.

Indeed, clicking any of the entries that start with a dash, or clicking the
<EDIT-button>, does nothing.

So I'm stuck. Can you (or anyone) think what the problem is?

Sorry, I can't help further. I've never used the extension you mentioned. Does it have a forum? Maybe someone there could help you?
