I would like to reduce the size of my /home partition and use the space for something else. How do I do this without loosing the data on this partition?
That'd depend on what type the /home partition is. If it's reiserfs use resize.reiserfs, otherwise use qparted tool which can do a good job even with ntfs filesystems.
