How do I install a "Patch"

I have been trying to install the HP printer driver for a HP Photosmart printer. In X-terminal (SuSe 9.2) the procedure is to su-password-cd to directory that the driver is located cd to the driver and apply the patch with "patch -p1 <hplip-0.9.7-2.patch. The patch is in the same directory as the driver. Bash gives me an error message that the 0.9.7-2patch is not a file or directory.

Thumbs up That did it!!!

I tried the patch command that DropSig posted and got the same Bash error msg. Then I tried his second suggestion - to provide the full path of the patch, although the patch was in the same directory as the driver. I used the patch command that SourceForge.net suggested and success. Now back to the next problem and 4 more days of grief and when I need the answer I'll post in linuxquestions.org
