I am a newbie and don't know the purpose of all the apps. with the funny names. But help me out, how in the world do I delete a file or an application in the menu? Got too many--ran out of memory.
Thanks. (No scripts please)
Maybe I didn't give enough information. I forgot that this forum was for all Linux users. I Have puppy linux installed on a USB stick. After installing a couple of programs, I have a red window popping up on the screen telling me my personal storage file is getting full with the recommendation to either resize or delete files. Now, it is perfectly clear to me that since I can't resize due to the limitations of the USB drive I will have to delete some files.
After looking at all the applications listed on the menu, (The ones with all the funny names) I can't for the life of me figure out which one to use or how to delete some applications that I don't think I'll ever use.
you have not provided enough information.
There is no generic way to delete something from a menu. What "apps."? What "funny names"? What menu are you talking about? What does this have to do with running out of memory?

I assume you mean hard disk space?
Unfortunately I don't know the answer. But I just wanted to say that it is useful to state your distribution (and version) especially for this type of questions.
From your other posts now I know it is Puppy. Browsing a person's other posts is not usually done. Because it is Puppy I don't know the answer, but hopefully other members do now they see the distro.

ok, this question seems to be very specific to Puppy Linux, so you might get more help if you request a moderator to move this thread to the Puppy forum (use the "Report" button).

One thing you can do is open the applications you are unfamiliar with to see what they are. That will give you an idea if you will ever use them. For example; if one of the applications is a word processor, and you do not use one, it would be a candidate for removal. If an unfamiliar application turns out to be a video player, and you do want that, keep it.

You haven't mentioned what the capacity of your USB memory stick is. Puppy normally loads into RAM and runs there but anything you want to save, (or install for that matter!) pictures, documents, whatever, would be saved back to the memory stick. If the Puppy Distro takes up all of the stick, you'll get messages to say there's no room to save anything. You can obviously configure to save your stuff to another writeable location.
The amount of physical memory you have may also be relevant.
So, how big's the stick?

Reason: "Install" comment
Puppy is kinda small, and you cannot delete anything from that installation because it's a static live-type system. But then, my guess is that you're referring to your personal data somewhere in your home folder which has now grown too big over time?
Look for a "file manager" in the menu. Those tools usually work similar to Explorer (Windows) and are easy to use. Otherwise, open a shell window, cd to your home directory, look what is there and begin deleting:
