How can I transcode video to work with my Zen v plus player?

How can I transcode video to work with my Zen v plus player? I haven't really found out how, and I reeally don't want to have to go to Windows to use the prepackaged software every time I want to put a video on the thing. I found some code to encode videos for the player that didn't work:
Code:
mencoder file1.avi -o test1.avi -vf scale=320:240 -oac mp3lame -ovc xvid -xvidencopts bitrate=800
When I put the encoded video onto my zen player, though, it told me the format was unsupported. Can somebody tell me how to get this to work?

My guess would be to take a file you know works, find all its encoding setting (i.e., “midentify this_vid_works.avi”), and use exactly the same settings.

Question okay, I got that...

It turns out that, aside from bitrate/size needs, which I can handle, the zen v plus can only handle uncompressed .avi files. HOW CAN I CREATE UNCOMPRESSED AVIs?
