How can I Install Modules for Custom Kernel

I have compiled a custom kernel onto an Ubuntu 5.10 on a thinkpad T20 (2.6.15-6). I am trying desperately to get direct rendering working but in order to get to that step I need to install modules I assume because here is the error I get when trying to install the files I need from dri.desktop.org:

DIRECT RENDERING OPEN SOURCE PROJECT - DRIVER INSTALLATION SCRIPT

[ http://dri.freedesktop.org ]

==========================================================================

The script will now compile the DRM kernel modules for your machine.

Press ENTER to continue or CTRL-C to exit.

Compiling...
ERROR: Kernel modules did not compile

The DRI drivers can not be installed without the latest kernel modules.
Installation will be aborted. See the dri.log file for information on
what went wrong.

#the dri.log doesn't make sense either:

The key to solve your situation is to figure out why you get
Code:
/home/sinjin/downloads/dripkg/drm/linux-core/Makefile:289: *** CONFIG_X86_CMPXCHG needs to be enabled in the kernel. Stop.

I am unclear on how to determine the cause of that error. I am also not finding anything similar. Any suggestions?

That is one of the options in ".config" file of your kernel.
