help on changing the font type used by a certain of applications

i am using xpdf xpdf-3.00-5 in fc2.
when i start xpdf, a warning will show up:
Warning: Cannot convert string "-*-times-medium-r-normal--16-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1" to type FontStruct

i did xlsfonts | grep times-medium but could not find this one, instead sizes 14, 17 and 18 exist, not size 16.
i opened /etc/xpdfrc but could not find anything about this font type, only things like:
displayFontT1 Times-Roman /usr/share/fonts/default/Type1/n021003l.pfb
displayFontT1 Times-Bold /usr/share/fonts/default/Type1/n021004l.pfb

but i have no clue how this affects the default font type used by xpdf.
i also looked into the output generated by: xrdb -query but could not find anything about FontList.

and when invoke xemacs, i have a similar warning:
Warning: Missing charsets in String to FontSet conversion

this is more general, i even do not know from where i should start figure it out.
googled, but did not get clear answer.

thanks for your advice!
