linux-bare --> customised lean mean machine :> + Oops!
Hi! I guess I am being beaten by the upgrade bug....nothing to do, redo an install of RH7.1 without any options....just the very bare.
1)Built XFree86-4.1.0 + GADOS(ATI) patch for my laptop ...so that xv is enabled.Plus faster glx. With compiling of Xfree86 using "make World"...can I delete modules/libs not related to ATI??? Say 3tfx, mga...etc??? And the source tree....is it possible to configure it to only compile modules/drvs for specific VGA card?
2)Since startx by default points to twm, I did an rpm install of enlightenment, the latest. Using also icewm for none fanciful mood changes :> Edited xintrc. Even if I do not use enlightenment, just any wm.....I have to have this line in the config file...else can't load X...why??
cat /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc
...
"exec xterm -geometry 80x66+0+0 -name login"
And, I can't seemed to do a proper logout from X .....the logout will only take me out of the wm...not X. Settings will also not be retained....if use xdm/gdm....can take out that line....sure can load and exit......but I dun wanna use xdm/gdm.
3)Can'r seemed to find printtools/rhs-filters in the 4CDS I d/led.....duh? The default install of RH7.1 with printing enabled has the apps....but I spent hrs checking thru my CDs.....this is an issue...now I am having a problem with printing.
4)Ok.....after installing on system with 512mb ram.....swap is now 1gb ++ .....how can I reduce it to say 256???
Now have to go and compile kernel liaoz.....thanks for reading and hope to hear suggestions from u
At least system now free of unneccessary apps/docs/man/lib.....but headaches.....

ok...let me just add another issue....
1)Created a workgroup HOME
2)2K-desktop + Linux-desktop + Linux-laptop
3)All have TCP/IP. All using DHCP
4)Linux-desktop--->SCV
5)Linux-laptop + 2K-desktop ---->Linux-desktop(router)
6)smbclient -L IP_ADDR between Linux-systems:
ok...can see.....but in N-hood of 2k, unable to see the 2 Linux boxes.....also, smbclient on 2k system can but has a access denied warning.....2K.though can ping and access by using searching computers by IP to access shared folders and printer.

wow, you're indeed brave to compile X from source. I do not know the answers to your qns 1 & 2, but you might be able to get some information from searching online. good luck ...
As for qn 3, LPRng works fine (and you have installed it, so good for ya) but IMO Cups is probably a better choice because it can do internet printing and allows web administration of the printer service. quite cool stuff.
Now for your last question on the network share problem. FYI, there's a known problem where non-NTFS systems will not be able to access the shares of NTFS systems (because of security privileges). I think that's what you encountered - you get an access denied message when you try to 'smbclient -L \\<win2k box'.
You mentioned you cannot see the Linux boxes from the Win2k box. This problem looks strange to me since you can see the Win2k box from the linux boxes right? Anyway, this might be due to incorrect samba settings (check your smb.conf or use swat to configure) or a firewall presence. I tend to think it could be because of a firewall blocking outgoing Netbios name service advertisements from the linux boxes ... but you can troubleshoot further based on the info I have posted here.
Good luck.

heheh...not exactly the first time but I guess with a simple "Make World" and fulfiling the libraries/tools such as bison/flex when compile stopped 1/2 way...got used to it.... :> Just that in rpms, u get to choose the packages/modules to install..say matrox, then XFree86_MGA.....etc....with this source, EVERYTHING get compiled and dumped in system....
Would try asking in www.linuxquestions.org ..and not forgetting yahoo.... singaporeans can't be so unhelpful one mah.... at least u responded :>
CUPS...did consider it...but when got confronted with the lack of driver for canon210.....gave it up. It is using the similar to IPP protocol developed by HP...XPP....but I dun have a jetdirect printer/device....just have a server/gateway-direct LPT connect printer. I guess lpr should be good enough....by the way, wanna reccomend HP WebJetAdmin6.5(released) for a web based network printer management....has a linux version...cool.
As for the issue of being unable to view/browse....u are right...my win2K firewalling is affecting....I took it out(uninstalled) since internal network wshould be quite safe from hostility.....btw, this is just a simple home network.....but I applied this to at work, to use Linux as a fileserver...because of the increasing incidenses of viruses....Linux rocks! :>
Have been quite successful at mapping shares from linux to win32 systems...and vice versa, with specific users' rights(read/write).....still am learning and due to the vast numbers of ways I can deploy Linux as a more efficient file server at work....from experienses at home :>
Hmm, still am looking forward to suggestions.....by the way, know of any free virus scanner installed on Linux to scan networked systems for CIH/Codered/Blue/Nimda...etc....? Guess I would post this in another post...irrelevent....I need help instead for my immediate concerns :>
Thanks

-yes... you may delete unused modules at will. as for compiling only specific drivers, that's probably a makefile or configure option. i'd have to suggest read LOTS of xf86 documentation.

are you running just enlightenment and ice, or are you also running gnome with them? i had a problem a few months back where, when i logged out of x, it would hang at the prompt, and i'd have to ^C the thing to get out.

I am running enlightenment on X only. I have to Ctrl-backspace to kill X or go to the console and kill it.
